WHAT IS ACCELERATED READER ?
- The primary function of Accelerated Reader is to provide a computerized learning information system that helps to manage, motivate and assess student reading of self-selected books.
- AR provides a means of motivating every student to increase reading practice.
- Reading practice is essential to the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills that ensure a lifelong love of reading.
HOW DOES AR WORK?
- Set Individualized reading goals are established for each child by the teacher.
- Progress is monitored and reading level is increased systematically.
- A child chooses books and reads them at his/her own pace.
- Teachers and parents may also read to or with the child.
- Each child will have the opportunity to take a short reading quiz about the selected book during his or her scheduled computer lab class each week. Also, the computer lab will be open to any student accompanied by a parent on Monday's after school from 2:45 – 3:15 pm every week.
- A report called TOPS will print in the computer lab after taking a quiz so that the student can receive immediate, individualized, constructive feedback to direct ongoing reading practice.
- The student may put this report into the “AR Prize Box” located in the computer lab for a chance at wining various prizes to be awarded during our Monday morning kick off.
MOTIVATION
- Students who meet their individual reading goals and end the marking period with an 85% or higher average for comprehension will be eligible to spend their reading practice point at our schools A.R. store.
- At all levels of reading, parents are encouraged to read to and with their child on a regular basis.
- Reading Practice Helps Students!!!
CAN NON-READERS PARTICAPATE? APSOLUTELY!
- Teachers will be reading AR books to their classes. The children will have the opportunity to take tests.
- Volunteers will read AR books to a child. The child will take the AR test with the volunteer.
- Once students become Independent Readers, they will take tests without assistance.
